Gospel Mark 2:23-28 January 22, 2019 by Florence D’Costa

Mark 2:23-28 Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”

25 He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”

27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

My views :
The Pharisees were always trying to find fault with Jesus.  Every opportunity they got, they would try to set a trap for him.  But Jesus Christ being the Son of God, was God and Man and He knew what was in their hearts and he always had the right answer for them.  In fact, he was teaching them.  The Pharisees made lots and lots of rules and it really became a big burden for the people.  So Jesus Christ was indirectly telling them to make things easy for the people instead of burdening them with so many laws. And that is why he said that Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.  People normally eat three meals a day – breakfast, lunch and dinner.  So, when the disciples were hungry, it was not wrong for them to pick some heads of grain to eat on the Sabbath. Then he further added that the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath. Meaning that he was the Boss of the Sabbath and not the Pharisees who made unnecessary laws just to burden the people.

So my dear people to worship God is definitely not a burden.  All we need is LOVE – to Love God with our whole being and to love our neighbour as ourselves.  The Pharisees made things very complicated for people to worship Yahweh and Jesus was teaching them to Love God and the people in an uncomplicated way.

Romans 12:2 by Florence D’Costa

Romans 12:2  Do not copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.  Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

What does Paul mean.  He means exactly what he has written – He very specifically tells us not to copy the behaviour and customs of this world.  At the moment in Australia a small group is clambering to redefine marriage and in Victoria the Government is trying to bring in a culture of death – they are wanting to bring in Euthanasia.  Now this is the way some parts of the world are thinking. But Paul says, ‘let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. ‘  So, we are called to look to God and not to the world, He will teach us his ways and make us a new person who will not be part of the world but a people who will belong to God.  When we belong to God, we will know God’s Will for us which will be good, pleasing and perfect – to God ofcourse.

The ways of the world is definitely not God’s ways and hence it should definitely not be our ways as well.  My experience is when we look to Christ and follow God’s Holy Will, we will be transformed and made new and when people see us, they will surely know that we belong to Christ.

We come into His Presence

It is important to first of all to ask God to give us a gift of prayer. For, to long to pray is to be in love with your God

To pray is to come into the presence of God. If only we could imagine what it means to come into God’s Presence. For God to want us to come into His Presence is such a great invitation. It is a great privilege. Well, God’s love for us is so great that His Love for us, draws us to Himself. His Love is magnetic and it continually draws us to Himself.

It is when we surrender to Him, that we develop a longing and a thirst to be in His Presence. So, God is asking us to totally surrender to him.

Now, each one of us have the KEY to enter into God’s Presence and the KEY is Surrender. When we surrender to Him, He then takes us into His Presence and gradually makes us pure and holy.

Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness.

New International Version
Mt 6:33. “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”.

What does this mean? ◄ Isaiah 64:6 ► “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away”.

If we do consider ourselves to be righteous, we definitely cannot compare with God. We are sinful and God is perfect without sin. God created us to be perfect but we are not. So what can we do? We are all called to be perfect – we need to be single eyed – Have our gaze on Jesus Christ.

It is a command of God for us to seek Him first. He is and must be our number One. When He is our Number One,

  • We will love him and follow His Commandments.
  • We will try to please Him in every way, instead of waiting for Him to please us
    in every way.
  • We will be ready to make sacrifices and to put our desires last.
  • We would be eager to study God’s word and to be obedient.
  • We will be ready to walk the straight and narrow path instead of walking the
    broad road.
  • We will live to love Jesus Christ and to follow Him who is our Lord and Master.
  • We will love God First and we will love our neighbour as ourselves.
  • We must die to ourselves and have self control. It is important to live one day at a time – living for Christ Jesus alone. Every day, it is important to pray for grace to live a pure and holy life.

Suffering – Can you Pray?

To those who are sick in hospitals, nursing homes, sick at home and in agonising and excruciating pain.  Is it possible for such people to praise and thank God.  For those who are suffering terrible and excruciating pain, it is highly impossible to be praising God during that time but your love for God is above all others, then your soul is in the Presence of God.  That is what is important.  Loving God all the time even without saying One Word out loud. There is one thing I would like to tell you all.  When you are suffering excruciating pain, and you know that you love God above all else then, I am sure that God is very much aware of how much you love Him and YOU CAN BE SURE THAT YOU ARE IN HIS EMBRACE.  Suffering, Happy, Sad, Laughing, Dancing, Crying, Smiling – whatever you may be doing – if you love God above all else, you can be sure that you will be FOREVER IN HIS EMBRACE and that is the safest place to be at all times.

Are we Playing God? Is Capital Punishment Necessary?

Are we playing God?  God is Our Creator.  He created each one of us and the He placed a Soul in our Inner Being where He dwells.  There are many people who do not have a close relationship with God.  There are many Christians and those of other religions including atheists who have somehow become criminals and are imprisoned.

Prisons are highly protected places, where prisoners are held.  They lose their freedom and they are kept in for a period of time according to their crime.  There are some countries who still have the death penalty.  Many prisoners get life imprisonment according crime.

Indonesia still have the death penalty for Drug Traffickers.  Andrew Chan and Sukumaran are two Australians who were caught in Indonesia for Drug Trafficking and are now condemned to die along with other prisoners.  Their lawyers are still fighting their case and we do not know what the outcome would be but THE TIME HAS COME NOW FOR US TO PRAY THAT THE DEATH PENALTY SHOULD BE SCRAPPED.

Blessed are the Merciful for they shall receive Mercy

In Indonesia, some prisoners are rehabilitated and then they are condemned to die.  Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukuraman were rehabilitated in prison and then they in turn have began rehabilitation programs for their prison inmates.

God is our creator and He sent His only Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ to die for us, so that we may live.  God is Merciful and He is calling each one of us to be merciful as well.  So,  now the time has come for each one of us to be merciful to each other.  Let us begin to pray that the DEATH PENALTY ALL AROUND THE WORLD WOULD BE SCRAPPED AND LET US ALSO PRAY THAT IF PRISONERS ARE REALLY AND TRULY SORRY FOR THEIR SINS AND MISTAKES AND HAVE DECIDED TO LIVE A CLEAN LIFE, THEN THEY SHOULD BE AFTER A PERIOD OF TIME, SET FREE – BE ON PAROLE.  THESE ARE PRISON TERMS.

God of Mercy and Compassion.

Let us all examine ourselves during this Lenten Season and see in what ways have we failed TO BE MERCIFUL and TRY TO BE MERCIFUL FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON.

LET US PRAY!

Mount Calvary

By Florence D’Costa

Every time we make the Stations of the Cross, are we making the journey that Jesus made on that fateful day, when he was condemned by Pilate to die on a cross, 2000 years ago?  Well, Jesus Christ died and he rose again victoriously, 2000 years ago.  He is now seated at the Right hand of God and He is constantly interceding for us.  So, why do we make the Stations of the Cross atleast once week,  during the Lenten Season?

Well, for me, I journey along with Jesus on that fateful day.  I journey along with His Mother Mary.   I journey with her as I can imagine how broken she was to see her only son being condemned, scourged, crowned with thorns, robed as a king and mocked as ‘The King of the Jews” and finally He was crucified and He died between two thieves.  The Son of God, the Son of Mary who was God and Man – who knew no sin, became SIN by carrying the sins of the world on His shoulders.  He suffered and died such a humiliating death on the cross BECAUSE OF HIS GREAT LOVE FOR YOU AND ME.  He was prepared to die for us, so that we might LIVE forever with Him in Heaven.

The Old Rugged Cross by Don Meon

What happens as I journey with Jesus and Mother Mary on that fateful day?  I relive the horror of that day.  I look into the eyes of Jesus as He carries his cross.  There is so much of pain in his eyes.  He suffers physical pain, pain of rejection, humiliation, he feels alone as he walks to his death.  Crowds are jeering at him women are crying for Him.  He meets his mother and their eyes meet.  No words pass from their lips but their hearts are wrenched in two.   Which mother on earth has witnessed her innocent son who committed no sin suffer and die such a humiliating death though He was Divine and yet Man.  No mother on earth, only Mother Mary.

On the cross His greatest suffering was when He carried the sins of the world on His shoulders, He cried, MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME.  You see Sin and God cannot be united and hence Jesus felt forsaken by His Father in Heaven.  Then Jesus said besides other things, IT IS FINISHED and He gave up HIS SPIRIT.

WHEN I look at Jesus dying on the cross, I know that after I have journeyed with Jesus and His mother, I cannot be the same person.  I know now that JESUS CHRIST has given me abundant graces to become a better person.  I have learnt to be ready to accept humiliation, suffering, ridicule etc all for the love of Jesus.  JESUS WAS GOD AND MAN AND HE WAS SINLESS AND HE SUFFERED AND DIED FOR THE WHOLE WORLD.  SO I MUST ALSO BE READY TO BE LIKE MY LORD AND MASTER.

Every Christian is persecuted in different ways and we must be ready to face persecution and so journeying with Jesus during His Most terrible Passion and Death is the best way for us to be strengthened TO BE LIKE OUR MASTER – JESUS CHRIST.

So my dear brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ REJOICE AND BE GLAD WHEN YOU ARE PERSECUTED FOR JESUS CHRIST ROSE VICTORIOUSLY FROM THE DEAD AND HE IS NOW SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD THE FATHER.  SO, WE WILL ALSO BECOME BETTER PEOPLE WHEN WE FACE PERSECUTION BUT WE MUST FACE IT WITH LOVE AND FORGIVENESS IN OUR HEARTS TOWARDS OUR PERSECUTORS.
