THE PARABLE OF THE 10 VIRGINS

Matthew 25:1 – 13
The Parable of the Ten Virgins
1 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. 6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ 7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ 9 “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ 10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. 11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ 12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ 13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

Read the above parable slowly. Then close your eyes and meditate. Ask yourself the question – What is this parable telling me? What message is coming across to me?

We all know that CHRIST IS THE BRIDEGROOM and THE CHURCH OR EACH INDIVIDUAL IS THE BRIDE. Now that we are aware of this. Let us go to the next step.

If Christ is the Bridegroom and You/I/The Church are the Bride, are we ready for Christ? Do we have oil in our lamps like the wise virgins. Are we ready when Christ Jesus comes to take us as His Bride? Have we surrendered our lives to Him? Are we willing to do God’s Holy Will? Are we living everyday according to His Commandments of Love? Is there any unforgiveness in our hearts against anybody? Are we gossiping, lying, cheating, thinking and speaking mean things about anybody. Is there envy in our hearts. Are we selfish and only thinking about our families and neglecting the Church and the Community? Do we share with the poor? Are we generous with each other in thought, word or deed.

Well, if we are living our lives according to His Commandments of Love and we have surrendered our lives to God and for His Service. If God is Our Number One and He is Our First Priority. If we pray and worship as a family unit and as a Community at large, then I think we are like the Wise Virgins who took oil in jars along with their lamps. The Oil stored in our jars which we could use when we run out of oil, is the

The Holy Spirit
The Word of God
The Eucharist and the other Sacraments.
Love for God the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit
Tithing
Sharing/Generous in our Thoughts, Words and Deeds. Visting the Sick etc.
Sharing the responsibilities in the Home
Love for Our Neighbour
And whatever you feel the Lord is asking you to do.

If we are living accordingly, then I know when Christ, Our Bridegroom comes to take us to the Wedding Banquet, we will be READY AND WAITING. WHEN WE ARE WAITING FOR SOMEONE WHOM WE LOVE, WE GET READY AND WE WAIT WITH GREAT EXCITEMENT. IF OUR LOVED ONE TAKES LONG TO ARRIVE, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT WE BE READY WHILE WE WAIT BECAUSE WHEN OUR LOVED ONE, JESUS CHRIST, OUR BRIDEGROOM COMES TO TAKE US TO THE WEDDING BANQUET – IT WOULD BE THE MOST EXCITING AND JOYFUL TIME. THIS OFCOURSE IS WHEN WE DIE AND HE COMES TO TAKE US HOME TO OUR HEAVENLY KINGDOM.

During our life Christ Jesus comes as a Bridegroom every day to greet us and to meet us in the Eucharistic Celebration. At Mass He invites us to His Banqueting Table of Love. So we need to come early for Mass and wait with Great Eagerness for Our Bridegroom to come and take us to His Banqueting Table of Love!

This is my experience at every Eucharistic Celebration. Christ Jesus comes to greet me and I am a Bride, dressed in white and He always presents me with a Bouqet of flowers at every Mass. Everyday, He gives me a Bouquet of flowers of different colours and I present them to the Blessed Trinity with Excitement, Joy, Happiness, Love and Peace and The Father, Son and the Holy Spirit accept the Flowers from me with Love! Maybe you would have your own experiences.

So, let us as Individuals and as a Church work at becoming a Beautiful Bride for Christ Our Bridegroom.
